Ford F-550 Chassis vs. Ram 5500 Chassis

As any seasoned commercial truck shopper or fleet manager knows, power is a primary concern when choosing a truck for your business. After all, if it can't haul the tools and gear you need on the job, what good is it? Fortunately, when it comes to power and performance, the Ford F-550 Chassis is no slouch. Outfitted with a standard 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel Engine, the Ford F-550 Chassis boasts a whopping 330 horsepower and 750 pound-feet of torque. With all that power, the Ford F-550 Chassis can handle payloads of up to 12.730 pounds and has a  gross combination weight rating of up to 40,000 pounds.

By comparison, the standard engine of the Ram 5500 Chassis simply doesn't measure up. With a 6.4-liter HEMI® V8 engine, the Ram 5500 Chassis only offers up 429 pound-feet of torque, making its gross combination weight rating top out at just 26,000 pounds.

Fuel Options

Fuel costs are always a concern for business owners, and with the price of gas and diesel always rising, it's always a good idea to look for a work truck with alternative fuel options. Fortunately, Ford knows that business owners and fleet managers need versatile vehicles and even more versatile fuel options, which is why the new Ford F-550 Chassis comes available with a Compressed Natural Gas / Propane Prep Package when you choose its available 6.8-liter Gas V10 engine. Unfortunately, for Ram 5500 Chassis owners, gas and diesel are the only fuel options available to them.

Undoubtedly one of the best things about owning a Ford F-550 Chassis is just how ready for work it is right from the get-go. Outfitted with an available factory-installed programmable upfitter interface module and six factory-installed upfitter switches, the Ford F-550 Chassis allows you to easily equip your work truck with winches, floodlights, CB radio equipment, and more without needing to use aftermarket parts. What's more, since the Ford F-550 Chassis is so versatile, you can easily equip it with other upfit options like a dump bed, flat cargo bed, cargo box, or any of a variety of other options.

As for the Ram 5500 Chassis, while you can certainly outfit it with the upfitting options you like in the rear, it lacks factory installed upfitter switches and a programmable upfitter interface module like the Ford F-550 Chassis, meaning you'll have to go to great pains to get comparable functionality.
